How to Become a Welder in Ontario

1. Register as an apprentice

   You register a training agreement to become an apprentice in the trade.

2. Complete on-the-job training

   You complete the on-the-job training hours set out in the Apprenticeship Training Standard, with your sponsor signing off on skills as you learn them.

3. Complete in-school training

   You complete three levels of in-school theoretical training, which may be delivered in block release, day release, part-time or alternative formats.

4. Pass the certifying exam

   You pass the certifying exam for the trade.

5. Receive your certificates

2. Apply for an apprenticeship program

2. Collect supporting documentation

   You collect all supporting documentation before applying, because applying without all documents will cause a delay.

3. Submit the assessment application

   You create a My Ontario account, select Individual, create a new application, select Trade Equivalency Assessment and follow the steps to submit your application.

4. Challenge the certifying exam

5. Pay for the certificate
